Tracking Your Outdoor Adventures: Top Apps for Hikes, Bike Rides, and Workouts

Welcome to another Technology Tuesday on Kaci’s Ramblings! Today, we’re diving into the world of activity tracking apps. Whether you’re a hiker, cyclist, or fitness enthusiast, there are numerous apps designed to help you log and track your adventures. Let’s explore some of the top picks for each category, based on consumer reviews and then I will dive into the ones that I actually use.

So, when I asked Google’s AI to give me a list of the most used fitness tracking apps for hikes, bike rides, and workouts, this is what I got:

Hikes

  1. AllTrails: With a massive database of trails, detailed maps, and user reviews, AllTrails is a go-to app for hikers of all levels. It allows you to track your route, elevation, and progress in real time.
  2. Hiking Project: This app provides a comprehensive collection of trail guides, including user-submitted photos and reviews. The offline trail maps come in handy for areas with limited connectivity.

Bike Rides

  1. Strava: Known for its social features and competitive elements, Strava is a favorite among cyclists. It tracks various metrics such as speed, distance, and elevation, while also offering route planning options.
  2. MapMyRide: Backed by Under Armour, MapMyRide offers diverse route tracking, nutrition tracking, and an active community of cyclists sharing their experiences.

Workouts

  1. Fitbit: Beyond its renowned fitness tracking capabilities, the Fitbit app includes a diverse exercise log, allowing you to monitor different types of workouts, set goals, and track your progress over time.
  2. Nike Training Club: For those seeking guided workout sessions, the Nike Training Club app is a treasure trove of expert-led routines catering to various fitness levels and goals.

Personally, though, I use my own personal cocktail of apps to cover all my activities, yet keep track of them all in one place. Okay, well, two, because Apple Fitness grabs everything from all of the apps and ports them all over to Strava…

  • Apple Fitness – All Workouts: The free app that comes with the Apple Watch. I use this to daily track my activities, steps, and log workouts. I am a highly reward motivated person, so closing my rings every day helps me to stay motivated. The Apple Watch is also my favorite app for tracking roller skating. For some reason the Strava and MapMyRun apps don’t log skating as a workout as well, but Apple Fitness does merge the skating workout to the other apps I use for tracking purposes.
  • Strava – All Workouts: I have a free membership at Strava. I switch to a paid membership in the summer when I am hiking a lot. I love being able to see all of my activities on the activity log. I also love the online and offline maps for hiking, as well as the emergency features and the ability to sort trails by experience level. It logs my hikes and walks from the app or my Apple Watch. Apple Fitness ports all of my activities into this app, not just the ones I use Strava to record.
  • MapMyRide – Strength Training: This was the first app I ever used. I entered my very first workout routine in this app and I still use it to log that routine. This records my reps and weight, gives me reports that I can access, and ports my activity over to Apple Fitness and Strava.
  • Paddle Logger – kayaking: This app works a lot like Strava for hiking. It logs my paddles from the app or my Apple Watch, even if I lose cell signal. It also has emergency features and I keep a paid membership during the summers.
  • Rouvy Rouvy Companion App: With Rouvy, The realistic indoor cycling app that lets you ride, race, and train on the world’s most scenic routes. And the Companion App, Turn your smart phone into a controller to improve your ride. Now you have more options and more control over how you want to ride. I really love using Rouvy so that I can experience realistic cycling all over the world from the comfort of my home gym. My Smart technology enable indoor trainer adjusts the resistance and creates real training instead of a flat ride.

Whether you’re exploring new trails, conquering challenging routes, or pushing your limits through workouts, these apps can be valuable companions on your journey to staying active and healthy.

Stay tuned for more tech insights next Tuesday, and don’t forget to share your favorite activity-tracking apps in the comments below! Until our next adventure, keep wandering and wondering!! 🌍✨
